HOW OFTEN DO SMOKE ALARMS NEED TO BE REPLACED?
If you don’t know, you are not alone. Many people don’t know that the answer is every ten years. Smoke alarms, like so many things in our homes, have an expiration date. A smoke alarm’s age can be determined by looking on the back or side of the device to see the date of manufacture. They should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation). Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and the batteries should be replaced when they begin to chirp, which is a signal they are running low.
According to Underwriters Laboratories in the 1970’s, it would take about 30 minutes for a fire to take over a room. Today it can take less than 5.
